Our History
CITS History
CITS was started by Pastor Howard A. Alperin and his wife Gloria. Before being saved in the early 1990's Pastor Howard, then a firefighter/paramedic in Baltimore County Maryland was called to the scene of a homeless man frozen to death in front of a building. This touched Pastor Howard, but he did not know just what to do. After being saved he felt led to start a homeless ministry. He and his wife started what was then known as Compassionate Ministries in 1992 which has since become Compassion in the Streets Ministries, Inc. The ministry is run by a volunteer seven member board and Pastor Howard handles the day to day operations. There is no paid staff involved at CITS. All parties involved volunteer their time and efforts.
CITS has since added at Jail Ministry. Members from CITS go each week to the Ladies Jail in Memphis, TN and teach a
Bible study every Monday.
